Introduction to our residential courses

If you want to improve your Esperanto or experience the language "in action" the best way is to attend one of our annual on-site courses. Those mentioned below are all residential and take place in the UK at Wedgwood Memorial College, Barlaston. Our EAB office is situated on-site so there's a great opportunity to visit the new Esperanto centre, meet Viv in the office, peruse the library shelves, wander around the library and buy from the range of new and second-hand books on sale.

Application forms and further information about these courses and about the college in general may be requested either from us at the EAB office or from the Wedgwood Memorial College.

Esperanto Summer Festival

NOTE: Participants for the Summer Festival - 10th-14th August 2009 - click here for travel & related information!

The 2009 Esperanto summer festival at Barlaston again brings you the popular modular approach. The traditional week-long festival offers short and long modules with a choice of levels and activities. Although it is anticipated that most participants will come for the full week, and will probably stay on the same programme, it will be possible to elect one module from Monday to Wednesday and /or another from Wednesday to Friday, from different programmes if desired.

For instance, a post-beginner might decide to take module A1 but not proceed to module B1. A more advanced Esperantist might elect solely the specialist module B2. Someone making really speedy progress might choose to follow A1 with B2. Alternatively, as in 2008, it is hoped Esperantists will take the opportunity to use the festival either for exploring the locality (programme C) or for individual study using the ample and excellent resources in the Biblioteko Butler (programme Ĉ).

Our aim is to provide an Esperanto total-immersion week which we find is an excellent way of encouraging rapid progress, however, complete beginners may flounder. The week has become renowned over the years and usually attracts a fair sprinkling of non-British Esperantists which means that the chat and babble is truly international. The food is excellent, the evenings in the local pub, cosy and supportive. If you have already acquired the basics of the language or are at the 'fluent Esperantist' stage then you will enjoy the course immensely and reap Esperanto rewards!

Our Ni Festivalu! weekend course is traditionally held in January. This 'Festival' weekend is the ideal occasion for any Esperantists who wish to organise a group meeting or activity to come along together and enjoy the on-site Esperanto atmosphere. Next year's dates: 15th - 17th January 2010.

A regular firm favourite is the theatre group and anyone with an interest is very welcome - you don't need to be an actor/actress to come along! This group studies at least one original work in Esperanto and tries out and has fun with one or two others. The sessions combine theoretical and practical help and the results are sometimes later performed at other Esperanto gatherings. Good fun! For more information contact our office.
